Ca' Pesaro
A Baroque marble palace on the Grand Canal, designed by Baldassare Longhena for the Pesaro family. Work began in 1659 and was completed by Gian Antonio Gaspari in 1710, following the original plan. The façade combines colossal columns and smaller columns framing arched windows above a rusticated base, with an inspiration that recalls Sansovino. Since 1902 it has housed the municipal collection of modern art, with painting, sculpture and graphic works from the 19th and 20th centuries, centred on pieces acquired at the first Venice Biennales. In the central hall you can see works by Kandinsky, Chagall and Bonnard, and there is an outstanding collection of sculptures, including those of Medardo Rosso. The upper floor is the Museum of Oriental Art, with some 30,000 objects, mostly from Edo-period Japan, together with Chinese and Indonesian pieces, collected by Prince Henry of Bourbon-Parma.
