Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is an extensive 58.3-hectare park in central Tokyo that blends three garden styles: a formal French garden, an English landscape garden and a traditional Japanese garden. It has more than 20,000 trees, including 1,500 cherry trees of 75 varieties that bloom in spring, and a greenhouse with over 1,700 tropical and subtropical species, notably 900 species of orchid. Visitors can stroll past ponds with water lilies, the azalea garden and the maple garden, and admire the Taiwan Pavilion, the only building to survive the 1945 bombings. There are also two Japanese teahouses offering the tea ceremony, an art gallery and a former imperial residence. During cherry blossom season it is a popular spot for hanami, and the National Chrysanthemum Exhibition is held in November. The garden has three entrance gates and is open from 9:00 to 17:30 (hours vary by season), with admission costing 500 yen.
