St Peter's Square
CultureVisit: ~30 min
Monumental square in front of St Peter's Basilica, in Vatican City, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the mid-17th century. Two great semicircular colonnades with 284 columns embrace it, and in the centre stands an Egyptian obelisk brought to Rome by Caligula, flanked by two fountains. Maderno's façade and Michelangelo's dome close the view. Access to the square is free.
