Serra Grossa of Alicante
Sierra Grossa is a limestone rise of 173 metres and about 80 hectares facing the Mediterranean, formed by two hills: the Molinet or Santa Ana hill and a larger one. It is now conceived as an urban forest park: it has hiking routes signposted by the city council that connect neighbourhoods such as Vistahermosa and Albufereta with the paths of the upper part, and the Pineda de Bonavista, on the northwest slope, serves as one of the main access points. The area is also a regular climbing training spot. On its slopes are the remains of a Bronze Age settlement, the ruins of the old hermitage of Santa Ana and Civil War trenches and sentry boxes. Its stone, the 'piedra juliana', was used in buildings such as the Basilica of Santa María or the Teatro Principal. The vegetation includes dwarf fan palm, buckthorn and esparto grass, and the fauna includes the black wheatear, the serin and the Iberian wall lizard.
