Church of Saint-Bruno des Chartreux

CultureVisit: ~30 minFreeOpening hours: Lunes a sábado 15:00-17:00, salvo festivos; cierres excepcionales algunos lunes

Saint-Bruno des Chartreux is the former church of the Lyon charterhouse, at 56 rue Pierre Dupont, on the slopes of the Croix-Rousse. The Carthusians settled on this hill in 1584 and began the church in 1590; the present façade, by Louis Sainte-Marie Perrin, dates from 1871. It is a Baroque work of the 17th and 18th centuries that has undergone a long, comprehensive restoration. Best known is the baldachin over the high altar, designed in 1738 by Giovanni Servandoni beneath the dome of the crossing: its drapery is real cloth hardened with stucco, which is unique in the world. As well as the church, the guided tour includes the cloisters and the chapter house of the former monastery. Entry to the church is free during opening hours, which are short: afternoons only.
