The botanical garden covers about eight hectares within the Parc de la Tête d'Or, in the 6th arrondissement, with access from Avenue Verguin. It was created in 1795 on the slopes of the Croix-Rousse and moved to the park in 1857, with the orangery rebuilt stone by stone. The metal greenhouses were put up in 1880 and rebuilt in 2000; the large greenhouse has a central pavilion 21 metres high. There are more than 15,000 plants and a greenhouse complex with nearly 6,000 species, including more than a thousand of orchids and carnivorous plants. Outside there is an alpine garden with 1,700 mountain species, from March to October, a historic rose garden with 360 varieties and the Madagascar greenhouse.
