The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna occupies a palace on the Ringstraße, decorated with marble, stucco, gold leaf and paintings, and features a staircase adorned with works by Gustav Klimt and other 19th-century artists. Its galleries hold collections of archaeology, sculpture, applied arts, weapons, numismatics and a notable picture gallery with works by artists such as Rubens, Velázquez, Raphael, Dürer, Titian, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Caravaggio and Vermeer. Among the most celebrated pieces are Benvenuto Cellini's famous salt cellar and an extensive selection of paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, as well as portraits of the Spanish royal family sent by Philip IV.
