Plaza de España

Seville's Plaza de España is a semicircular architectural complex in the Parque de María Luisa, built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition and designed by Aníbal González. Visitors walk around a square ringed by arcaded galleries, two towers at the ends and a central building, crossed by a navigable canal with four bridges representing the old kingdoms of Spain. Along the square are 48 ceramic benches dedicated to the Spanish provinces, each with a panel illustrating a historical event and a map, as well as 52 medallions bearing portraits of illustrious figures from Spanish history. One of the galleries gives access to the Seville Military History Museum, and the square is decorated with neo-Mudéjar wooden coffered ceilings, heraldic shields and statues of heralds. The square's canal, 15 metres wide and 500 metres long, can be toured by rented rowing boats, and at its centre stands a fountain surrounded by ceramic and marble balustrades.
