Lene-Voigt-Park

Lene-Voigt-Park is a linear urban park about 800 metres long and 80 to 130 metres wide, built over the former Eilenburger Bahnhof. Its main axis is a straight, 5-metre-wide promenade, flanked to the north by birch trees and a gabion wall with built-in seating, and to the south by a wide strip of open lawn dotted with trees for free use. Further south, a band-shaped structure alternates squares planted with black locust trees, hedge "cabinets" and various sports and play facilities, such as table-tennis tables, playing fields and areas for pétanque, inline skating and climbing. Several rotating corten-steel elements are also notable. At the eastern end is the "Lenes Tauscho" swap cabinet, and on the north side of Reichpietschstraße there is a drinking fountain that runs from spring to autumn. The park, awarded the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2002 for citizen participation in its planning, serves as a green lung for eastern Leipzig and connects to the 'Grüner Ring' via the Anger-Crottendorfer-Bahnschneise.
