Church of All Saints
The Church of All Saints stands on Rūdninkų Street, next to the old Rūdininkai gate in the city wall. It was built between 1620 and 1632 by Wojciech Chludziński, secretary to King Sigismund III Vasa, and later became part of the convent of the Carmelites of the Ancient Observance, one of that order's centres in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It is a three-aisled basilica with 18 altars and was one of the first Baroque churches in the country. Its bell tower, in the late Baroque style, dates from 1743 and was topped with a Rococo dome after a fire. Inside, the highlights are the baldachin over the high altar, which resembles a royal throne, and a 17th-century Carmelite painting of Our Lady Saviour of the Souls in Purgatory. In the Soviet era it served as a warehouse and as an art museum hall, until it was returned to the faithful in 1991.
