Oceanogràfic
The Oceanogràfic opened on 14 February 2003 within the City of Arts and Sciences. It was designed by Félix Candela, then aged 87, together with the engineers Alberto Domingo and Carlos Lázaro; its hyperbolic paraboloid roofs recall the Los Manantiales restaurant that Candela built in Mexico City in 1958. The complex covers about 110,000 square metres, with 42 million litres of water spread across nine underwater towers, and is home to about 45,000 animals of some 500 species. It is organised into ten areas representing the Mediterranean, the Arctic, the Arctic islands, the tropics, temperate seas and the Red Sea, as well as a dolphinarium, mangroves, wetlands and a botanical garden. Its attractions include the sharks, penguins, sea lions, belugas and the underwater tunnel, which its website presents as the longest in Europe.
