Museum opened on 18 October 1996 next to Amir Timur Square. Its blue dome recalls that of the Gur-e-Amir mausoleum in Samarkand, and the building follows the medieval architectural tradition. It holds more than 5,000 items, with over 2,000 on display: maps, weapons, coins, miniatures, manuscripts, ceramics and jewellery on Timur's genealogy, campaigns and legacy.
