Meiji Shrine
Meiji Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Shibuya, Tokyo, dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken. Founded in 1920, it is surrounded by a 70-hectare forest with 120,000 trees of 365 species donated from across Japan. The inner precinct (Naien) houses the main buildings and a treasure museum in azekura-zukuri style. The outer precinct (Gaien) includes the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery with 80 murals depicting the emperor's life, the Meiji Memorial Hall and sports facilities. Festivals are held throughout the year, such as the Grand Autumn Festival (31 October to 3 November) with ceremonies and bugaku, and in January the ring-entering ceremony of a yokozuna. The forest is a place of recreation and tranquillity in the heart of Tokyo.
