Gran Teatre del Liceu
The Gran Teatre del Liceu is Barcelona's opera house, right on the Rambla. It grew out of a society of amateurs founded in 1837 and opened on its present site in 1847, to a design by Miquel Garriga i Roca. A fire destroyed it in 1861 and it reopened in 1862 under Josep Oriol Mestres; on 7 November 1893 an anarchist bomb killed about 20 people. Another fire, in 1994, led to a reconstruction directed by Ignasi de Solà-Morales, with reopening on 7 October 1999. Today the auditorium has 2,292 seats. The guided tour takes in the historic foyer, the Hall of Mirrors, the concert hall and the Círculo del Liceo, a private club dating from 1847 with Modernista painting.
