Okura Museum of Art
The Okura Museum of Art is a museum in Toranomon, Tokyo, housing a collection of around 2,500 works of Japanese and East Asian art assembled by industrialist Ōkura Kihachirō from the Meiji Restoration onwards. Highlights include three National Treasures: a Heian-period wooden statue of Samantabhadra (Fugen Bosatsu) on an elephant, a 1247 painted scroll, 'Imperial Guard Cavalry' (Zuijin Teiki Emaki), and a copy of the preface to the Kokinshū attributed to Minamoto no Shunrai. The museum was the first private museum in Japan, opening in 1917 and rebuilt in 1927 by architect Itō Chūta; the current building is a registered Cultural Property. It stands within the grounds of the Hotel Okura Tokyo and reopened in 2019 after renovation.
