Mosteiro de São Bento
CultureVisit: ~45 minFree
Benedictine monastery founded in 1590 on São Bento hill, in the centre of Rio. Its façade is sober, but the interior is one of the great examples of Brazilian Baroque, with gold-leaf-covered carved wood covering almost all the walls and ceilings. You go up by lift from Rua Dom Gerardo, and it retains its religious use with the community of monks.
