Çamlıca Mosque
The Grand Çamlıca Mosque crowns Çamlıca Hill, in the Üsküdar district on the Asian side of Istanbul. It was planned from 2000, construction began in 2013 and it opened for worship on 7 March 2019; the official inauguration took place on 3 May of that year. It was designed by two women architects, Bahar Mızrak and Hayriye Gül Totu, who drew inspiration from classical Ottoman architecture. It is the third mosque in Turkey with six minarets: four are 107.1 metres tall, a figure recalling the Seljuk victory at Manzikert in 1071, and the main dome reaches 72 metres, a number tied to the 72 nations of Istanbul. It can hold some 63,000 people at once. The complex also includes a museum, an art gallery, a library, a conference hall and an underground car park for 3,500 vehicles. It stands high above the city, so it can be seen from many points along the Bosphorus.
