Le Grand Rex
The Grand Rex opened on 8 December 1932 at 1 boulevard Poissonnière, in the 2nd arrondissement, and is one of the largest cinemas in Europe, with about 2,700 seats in the main auditorium. It was designed by Auguste Bluysen and the American architect John Eberson, a specialist in so-called "atmospheric theatres", and was inspired by Radio City Music Hall in New York. The great Art Deco auditorium imitates an ancient Mediterranean town beneath an illuminated starry vault more than 30 metres high. The restored facade, with its illuminated tower, is one of the recognisable profiles of the Grands Boulevards. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1981. Besides screenings, the cinema offers Rex Studios, an audio-guided tour of about 45 minutes through its technical spaces: the artists' entrance, the director's office, the projection booth, a special-effects room, a film set and a dubbing area.
