Osaka International Peace Center
The Osaka International Peace Center, known as Peace Osaka, is a peace museum opened in 1991 and funded by Osaka City and Prefecture. Its permanent exhibition is arranged in six zones across three floors: Osaka's appearance in 1945 and today, the reasons Japan went to war with the United States, life in Osaka during the war, the city reduced to ashes, post-war Osaka, and what each visitor can do to help maintain peace. The museum has a library, a video room and a memorial garden, and continuously runs peace-education programmes, documentary film screenings, temporary exhibitions — such as the display of photographs from the US National Archives on wartime and post-war Osaka — and activities for schoolchildren. Its institutional history is unusual: in 2015, following political pressure, the exhibition expanded its section on the American bombing of Osaka and removed content critical of Japan's actions in Asia, a change that sparked public debate about historical memory in Japan.
