The Church of San Pedro stands on the square of the same name, in the historic centre of Seville, on the site of a former mosque. It was built in 1379 and remodelled in the 16th and 18th centuries, so it combines Gothic, Mudéjar, Renaissance and Baroque elements, arranged in three naves. Its tower, the second tallest in the city after the Giralda, keeps a Mudéjar section at the base and a 16th-century belfry completed in 1597 with a tile-covered spire, the work of Martín Infante. In the baptismal chapel, a plaque records that Diego Velázquez was baptised in this church on 6 June 1599. Its notable works include the Cristo de Burgos, carved by Juan Bautista Vázquez the Elder in 1573, the high altarpiece with Saint Peter enthroned by Andrés de Ocampo, and paintings by Pedro de Campaña in the altarpiece of the Virgen de la Paz. It is the home of several brotherhoods, among them that of the Cristo de Burgos, which processes in the early hours of Holy Wednesday.
