Temple of Augustus (Temple d'August)
At number 10 Carrer del Paradís, hidden in a medieval courtyard of the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya, stand four columns almost nine metres tall that were part of the temple of the Roman colony of Barcino. It is dated to the 1st century BC and was dedicated to the imperial cult of Augustus; it occupied the centre of the forum, at the top of Mons Taber. The columns were incorporated into later buildings until they were discovered when a new street was opened in the 19th century. In 1835 the architect Antoni Celles documented the site; the fourth column, reassembled from fragments, stood in Plaça del Rei until 1956, when it was moved next to the other three. Today it is a space of the Museu d'Història de Barcelona (MUHBA) in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, near the cathedral.
