Monteagudo Castle
Monteagudo Castle is a fortification of Islamic origin situated on a rocky outcrop 149 metres high overlooking the Huerta de Murcia. The earliest documentary references to it date from 1078-1079, and it was declared a National Monument in 1931. The complex retains two concentric fortified enclosures: the upper one, rectangular in plan with square towers, and the lower one, with a ring of closely spaced towers. Notable features include the arrangement of re-entrant towers and a horseshoe arch at the entrance. At the summit stands the 14-metre sculpture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, designed in 1951 by Nicolás Martínez, which is greatly venerated and forms part of Murcian cultural tradition.
