Statue of Federico García Lorca

CultureVisit: ~15 minFree

In Plaza de Santa Ana, opposite the façade of the Teatro Español, a bronze poet looks toward the stage. The sculpture is by Julio López Hernández and was made between 1984 and 1986. The commission came from Miguel Narros, then director of the Teatro Español, who in 1984 asked the City Council for a monument to Lorca to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the premiere of "Yerma". The full-length figure holds in its hands a lark, or a nightingale, about to take flight, birds that feature prominently in Lorca's poetry. The statue was kept for nearly a decade in the Conde-Duque barracks while the square where it now stands was being redeveloped. On the base is the dedication "Madrid, a Federico García Lorca". It stands in the heart of the Barrio de las Letras, surrounded by bars and a few steps from Calle de Echegaray and Calle de Atocha.
