Monument to Calderón de la Barca

CultureVisit: ~15 minFree

A sculpture dedicated to the playwright Pedro Calderón de la Barca, in Plaza de Santa Ana, in Madrid's Barrio de las Letras. It is the work of the Catalan sculptor Juan Figueras y Vila and was unveiled on 2 January 1880. It is carved from Carrara marble and shows the writer seated, with a book in his hand. The three-tiered pedestal carries reliefs with scenes from four of his plays: La vida es sueño, El alcalde de Zalamea, El escondido y la tapada and La danza de la muerte. It is one of the few urban monuments in Madrid that still stand where they were first placed. It presides over one end of the square; at the other, facing the Teatro Español, heir to the old Corral del Príncipe where Golden Age comedies were premiered, there is a statue of Federico García Lorca. Calle de las Huertas is a stone's throw away.
