Grand Stables (Grande Écurie)
A building designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and completed in 1682 under Louis XIV, on the Place d'Armes, opposite the Palace of Versailles. Together with the Petite Écurie, on the other side of the Avenue de Paris, it formed the Royal Stables, where about a thousand people worked. It housed the king's hunting and war horses and has a covered wooden riding hall. Today that manège is the home of the Académie équestre de Versailles, founded by Bartabas in 2003, a company of ecuyers that performs the show La Voie de l'écuyère, with horsemanship, stage fencing, dance, singing and kyudo. After the performance you can wander freely through the stables. The building also houses the Galerie des Carrosses, a carriage museum that returned here in 1978 and reopened in 2016 after expansion works.
