Koutoubia Mosque
Almohad mosque from the 12th century and the largest in Marrakesh. Its minaret of about 77 metres, of reddish ashlar with blind arches and different decoration on each face, can be seen from half the city and served as a model for the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat. Its name comes from the booksellers (kutubiyyin) who had their stalls at its foot. Only the exterior can be visited: the gardens and the ruins of the first mosque; the interior is reserved for Muslims. It is next to Jemaa el-Fna square.
