CultureVisit: ~90 minFreeOpening hours: 06:00–23:00
Renaissance castle on Castle Hill, in the old town next to the Oder. It was the seat of the Dukes of Pomerania-Stettin; construction began in 1346 and the major Mannerist remodelling (1573-1582) was directed by Wilhelm Zachariasz Italus with Italian stonemasons. Catherine II of Russia was born here in 1729. About 60% was destroyed in the Second World War and it was rebuilt between 1958 and 1980 with its 16th-century appearance. Today it is a large cultural centre with a courtyard, towers and rooms open to visitors.
