Ashmolean Museum
The Ashmolean is the oldest university museum in the United Kingdom; it opened on 24 May 1683 to house the collection that Elias Ashmole donated to the University of Oxford in 1677, with Robert Plot as its first keeper. The present building, on Beaumont Street, is the work of Charles Cockerell, was built between 1841 and 1845 as the University Galleries and is in the classical style. It brings together art and archaeology from around the world. Among its best-known pieces are the Alfred Jewel, Anglo-Saxon, made of gold, enamel and rock crystal, with the inscription "Alfred mec heht gewyrcan"; the Guy Fawkes lantern, from around 1605; the Messiah Stradivarius violin; the 17th-century mantle of Chief Powhatan; and the painting "The Hunt in the Forest" by Paolo Uccello. A full visit takes several hours.
