Museo del Romanticismo
The Museo del Romanticismo occupies the palace of the Marquis of Matallana, built between 1776 and 1779 by the architect Manuel Martín Rodríguez, in the Justicia district. The State bought the building in 1927 to house the museum founded in 1924 by the philanthropist Benigno de la Vega-Inclán, reopened after a refurbishment in 2009. The rooms recreate the atmosphere of a 19th-century bourgeois home: drawing rooms, a billiard room, studies and an inner garden, with about 600 pieces of furniture, 4,000 photographs and 3,000 engravings. The painting collection includes works by Goya and Federico de Madrazo, as well as Leonardo Alenza's Satire of Romantic Suicide, a scene that pokes fun at the cliché of the despairing Romantic hero. The façade, on Calle de San Mateo, keeps a large doorway made of granite ashlars, typical of 18th-century Madrid civil architecture. The route is laid out like a lived-in house, with the everyday objects of the period in their place.
