The Faro de Moncloa is a 110-metre viewing tower built in 1992, the year Madrid was European Capital of Culture, designed by the architect Salvador Pérez Arroyo. It stands next to the Arco de la Victoria and the Museo de América, in the Moncloa district, and combines the function of a municipal telecommunications tower with that of a public viewpoint. An exterior panoramic lift rises to the glazed circular platform, 92 metres up, from which you can see Madrid in 360 degrees: the Sierra de Guadarrama, the Casa de Campo, the Royal Palace and the city centre. The tower closed in 2005 because of safety deficiencies found after the fire at the Windsor building, among them a spiral staircase only 80 centimetres wide, and reopened in 2010 after a 4.5 million euro refurbishment that added a second exterior lift. The visit to the platform lasts about 30 minutes.
