Municipal Printing House - Book Arts
This municipal museum opened in 2011 in the former Imprenta Municipal building, at number 15 Calle de la Concepción Jerónima. The building was constructed between 1931 and 1933, during the Second Republic, to a design by Francisco Javier Ferrero and Luis Bellido, and is an example of rationalist industrial architecture, with a reinforced concrete structure and an exposed brick facade. The museum occupies about 3,500 square metres spread over three floors and holds more than 3,000 pieces of graphic arts. The permanent exhibition traces the history of printing from the hand presses of the 15th to 18th centuries to mechanical machines and offset, with sections on illustration and bookbinding. Its pieces include a 17th-century press, another from 1789 and a Planeta machine from 1930, as well as gilding brass tools, lithographic stones and engraving plates. It programmes temporary exhibitions and typography and bookbinding workshops.
