Parish Church of El Salvador
The parish church of El Salvador is in the historic centre of Caravaca de la Cruz. The present building began construction in 1526 and was inaugurated in 1573 with the transfer of the Blessed Sacrament from the church of La Soledad. Its side portal, which became the main one when the church was left unfinished, is a Renaissance work in the form of a triumphal arch, with a first storey of pilasters and Ionic half-columns in three sections with different radii, decorated with shells and metopes bearing the crosses of Caravaca and of Santiago. The second storey holds a niche with the Baroque image of El Salvador, flanked by Ionic columns, and features pinnacles and the coats of arms of the Order of Santiago and of the Council of Caravaca. Inside, the high altarpiece stands out, a Baroque work from the church of the Society of Jesus in Caravaca, moved in 1876, as well as a set of sculptures. The church is declared a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) as a Monument.
