King's Kitchen Garden (Potager du Roi)
A garden of fruit trees and vegetables designed to supply Louis XIV's table. Jean-Baptiste de La Quintinie laid it out between 1678 and 1683, a short distance from the palace, and the king liked to stroll through it, entering by the Grille du roi. It is a historic monument and combines production with ornamental design: it brings together more than 60 traditional forms of fruit-tree pruning, some 400 varieties of fruit and numerous vegetable species. Since 1991 it has also housed the École nationale supérieure de paysage, so it is still cultivated for study. It lies on the rue du Maréchal Joffre, next to Saint-Louis Cathedral, which appears in the background of the garden's typical views. It covers about nine hectares and borders the Pièce d'eau des Suisses, dug at the same period.
