Musée d'art contemporain de Marseille [mac]
The mac is on avenue d'Haïfa, in the 8th arrondissement, and was born in 1994 when it split from the Musée Cantini, from which it inherited part of its collection. It closed for four years for building work and has reopened to the public. It brings together nearly 800 works from the second half of the 20th century and the early 21st, with a strong presence of the Nouveaux Réalistes, Support Surface, Arte Povera, Land Art, Fluxus, Narrative Figuration, performance and body art. The visit shows how these movements connect through artists such as César, who is closely tied to Marseille. Besides the building, the museum has an adjoining garden with outdoor works by Jean-Michel Alberola, Julien Blaine, César, Erik Dietman and Fabrice Gygi. The permanent collection is free to visit, so you can go in to see only the permanent galleries and decide afterwards whether to buy the temporary exhibition, which includes access to the rest of the museum.
