Iglesia de Santo Domingo
A church in the Realejo quarter that was once part of the Dominican convent of Santa Cruz la Real. Building work began in 1512 in the Gothic style and was completed later with Renaissance, Baroque and contemporary additions. It presides over a square containing the monument to Fray Luis de Granada. The façade opens with a stone portico of three semicircular arches, decorated with the initials of the Catholic Monarchs and royal coats of arms, and features a niche with the Virgin of the Rosary, co-patron saint of the city. The interior has a Latin-cross plan, a wide nave with five chapels on each side and rib vaults. Among its most notable pieces are a marble tabernacle from 1699 and the Baroque altarpiece with the camarín (shrine chamber) of the Crowned Virgin of the Rosary, begun in 1741 and completed from 1759 by Blas Antonio Moreno. Several Granada brotherhoods have their canonical seat here, including those of the Rosary and the Last Supper.
