Iglesia del Carmen
The Iglesia del Carmen was built between the late 16th century and 1614 for the Discalced Carmelites, established in Antequera since 1512 on a plot ceded by the town council in 1513; much of the work was paid for by Leonor de Segura, widow of Alonso Fernández de Córdoba. The sandstone façade opens with a semicircular arch between Tuscan columns under a broken pediment. To one side only the first stage of the former Torre del Gallo survives, demolished in 1883 and named after the weathervane that crowned it. The nave has a Mudéjar coffered ceiling of 1612-1614 with interlacing, grotesque masks and cherub heads beneath a half-orange dome. The main chapel has three altarpieces; the central one, by Antonio Primo de la Rosa with more than fifty sculptures by José de Medina around 1747, was never gilded and keeps the natural colour of red pine. In the spandrels of the entrance arch there are two paintings of the Annunciation by Antonio Mohedano. It stands in the plaza del Carmen, in the historic quarter, next to the Puerta de Granada viewpoint.
