Antequera City Museum
The Antequera City Museum (MVCA) occupies the Palacio de Nájera, an 18th-century manor house with a brick façade on the plaza del Coso Viejo. It grew out of the Municipal Archaeological Museum founded in 1908 by Rodrigo Amador de los Ríos, moved to the palace in 1966 and, after an extension, reopened in 2011 with five thousand square metres. Its main piece is the Ephebe of Antequera, a Roman bronze sculpture of the 1st century found in 1955 at the Cortijo de las Piletas: a naked youth 1.43 metres tall in a contrapposto pose, declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 2004. The tour also includes Roman epigraphy, megalithic and Chalcolithic remains, Visigothic pieces, Baroque sculpture by Pedro de Mena and painting by Antonio Mohedano, along with goldsmiths' work and religious textiles from the 15th to the 18th centuries.
