A Benedictine monastery founded in 1083 by Earl Roger de Montgomery. After the Dissolution in 1540, the western part was kept as a parish church: nave, aisles, porch and west tower. It is on Abbey Foregate, next to the English Bridge, and is a Grade I listed building. It is the setting of Ellis Peters' novels about the monk detective Cadfael.
