Stone Gate
The Stone Gate, Kamenita vrata in Croatian, is the only surviving gate of the old wall of Gradec, Zagreb's Upper Town. The Golden Bull of 1242 made Gradec a free royal city and required it to build walls; the gate is thought to have been built around 1266 as a rectangular tower with a passage for carriages, and its present appearance dates from the 18th century. Beneath the arch there is a chapel dedicated to the Virgin, patron of Zagreb. On the night of 30 to 31 May 1731 a fire swept through the Upper Town and reached Kaptol; on the third day, among the ashes, a painting of Mary with the Child appeared intact, with only its wooden frame burnt. A widow placed a small altar in the arch and devotion has grown ever since. Today there are benches and a table for lighting candles, and the marble walls carry engraved prayers.
