Mémorial des déportations
The memorial is housed in a Second World War blockhouse that the German army built at the foot of Fort Saint-Jean, on avenue Vaudoyer. It opened in 1995 as a memorial to the death camps and was reorganised in 2019 as a memorial to the deportations, linked to the Musée d'Histoire de Marseille. Its subject is Marseille during the war: a refuge city in the unoccupied zone, a transit city, a destroyed city and a strategic port. The exhibition uses maps, films and testimonies from victims, Jews and also political persecutees, resistance fighters and hostages. It covers the round-ups and deportations of 1943 and the destruction of the old districts on the north bank of the Vieux-Port, carried out by the Nazis with the collaboration of the Vichy regime. Entry is free and it is wheelchair accessible via the main entrance.
