Fort Saint-Jean (Marseille)

Fort Saint-Jean is a 17th-century fortification at the entrance to Marseille's Old Port, built by Louis XIV. Inside it preserves two earlier buildings: the Commandery of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem, from the 12th century, which served as a monastic hospice during the Crusades, and the 15th-century tower of René I, King of Provence. The fort was used as a prison during the French Revolution, as barracks and a disinfection station for the Army of Africa in the 19th and 20th centuries, and was occupied by the German army during the Second World War. In 1944, an ammunition depot explosion destroyed much of its battlements and historic buildings, which were rebuilt between 1967 and 1971. Since 2013 it has been part of the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM) and is linked by two footbridges to the historic Le Panier district and to the museum. Visitors can explore the Tower of King René, dedicated to the site's history, the DRASSM building, which houses a documentation centre, and the Georges Henri Rivière building, reserved for temporary exhibitions.
