Nicanor Piñole Museum
A museum dedicated to the Gijón painter Nicanor Piñole, who died in 1978 aged one hundred and spent a good part of his life and work in the same city where he is now exhibited. The centre holds more than 6,000 of his drawings, accompanied by paintings representative of different stages of his career, and the visit combines a chronological order with thematic groupings. The initial collection was expanded with pieces from the Jovellanos Birthplace Museum and the Fine Arts Museum of Asturias. The museum was made possible by a donation from the painter's widow, Enriqueta Ceñal Costales. It occupies the former Asilo Pola, a building designed in the early 20th century by Luis Bellido and built under the direction of Miguel García de la Cruz, in Plaza de Europa. As well as the galleries, it has a library, a documentation centre and temporary exhibitions.
