On the site where Leipzig's synagogue once stood, visitors find 140 empty bronze chairs arranged along the outline of the former building, each one symbolising the city's 14,000 Jews who were deported and murdered during the Holocaust. The memorial invites reflection in a quiet space set apart from the bustle of the city, where candles, flowers or stones can be left on the chairs as an act of remembrance and tribute to the victims. The site also contains an older memorial block created by Hans-Joachim Förster in 1966, recalling the destruction of the synagogue during Kristallnacht in 1938.
