Shanghai Museum
The Shanghai Museum is a public municipal museum dedicated to ancient Chinese art, located in People's Square, in Huangpu District. Its current building, opened in 1996 and designed by local architect Xing Tonghe, is shaped like an ancient bronze ritual vessel called a ding, with a square base and a round top symbolising the ancient Chinese concept of the world. Inside it holds more than 120,000 pieces arranged in eleven permanent galleries covering bronze, sculpture, ceramics, jade, painting, calligraphy, seals, numismatics, Ming and Qing dynasty furniture and the arts of China's ethnic minorities. Highlights include items of national importance, such as one of the three surviving "transparent" bronze mirrors from the Han dynasty, and a collection of 1,783 ancient Silk Road coins. The museum also has three temporary exhibition halls. The visit takes in five floors, giving access to the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. The museum offers guided tours and a shop. Admission requires advance booking during the Ancient Civilizations of the Americas exhibition.
