Kōriyama Castle, in Yamatokōriyama (Nara), is a historic site of the flatland style whose origins go back to the 10th century, although its present form is due to the expansion by Toyotomi Hidenaga in 1585. Walking around the grounds you can see the imposing stone walls and the moats surrounding the central and secondary enclosures, as well as the reconstructions of the Ote-mon gate and several yagura towers. A singular detail is that many of the blocks in the walls are gravestones, Buddhist statues and stones from temples, reused for lack of material. On the site of the former tenshu the foundations are preserved, confirmed by archaeological excavations. The castle is also famous for its cherry trees, selected among the best in Japan, which every spring attract many visitors during the Castle Festival. The walk also lets you visit the Yanagisawa Shrine, built in the central enclosure.
