The Vendôme Column stands in the centre of Place Vendôme and was erected on the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Austerlitz. Visitors can see its bronze cladding, made from cannons captured in the battle, decorated with bas-reliefs depicting scenes of war. At the top of the column stands a statue of Napoleon dressed as a Roman general, sculpted by Auguste Dumont. Inside the column there is a staircase leading to a small viewing platform at the top.
