Umeda Station is a large railway and shopping complex in north-central Osaka. Three companies operate there: Hanshin Railway, Hankyu Railway and Osaka Metro. The Hanshin terminal, opened in 1906 and moved underground in 1939, has 5 platforms and 4 tracks. The Hankyu terminal, opened in 1910 and relocated in 1971, has 10 platforms and 9 tracks across three lines. The Midōsuji Line metro station, opened in 1933, is the busiest in the city. The area's three metro stations (Umeda, Higashi-Umeda and Nishi-Umeda) are linked by underground passages and allow transfers within 30 minutes. The complex is surrounded by department stores, shopping centres and landmark buildings, and nearby stands the BIG MAN video screen above the Kinokuniya bookshop, a popular meeting point.
