St Mary's Cathedral, Tokyo

CultureVisit: ~45 minFree

Tokyo's Catholic cathedral occupies a building by Kenzō Tange opened in 1964 in the Sekiguchi district of Bunkyō. Its Latin cross plan rises through eight hyperbolic paraboloids which, as they gain height, trace a cross of light; four large stained-glass windows let natural light onto the concrete walls. The exterior is clad in stainless steel and, set apart from the main body, stands a 61.6-metre bell tower. Inside, a large organ by the Italian firm Mascioni was installed in 2004. The approach includes a Lourdes grotto, built in 1911, which evokes the traditional entrance to a Japanese temple. The cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Tokyo and Tange's funeral was held there in 2005.
