Courtauld Gallery

The Courtauld Gallery is an art museum located in Somerset House, on the Strand in London. It holds the collection of the Courtauld Institute of Art and is especially known for its French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings. The collection includes masterpieces such as Manet's 'A Bar at the Folies-Bergère' and a version of his 'Déjeuner sur l'Herbe', Renoir's 'La Loge', landscapes by Monet and Pissarro, a ballet scene by Degas, and eight major works by Cézanne. It also holds Van Gogh's 'Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear' and 'Peach Blossom in the Crau', Gauguin's 'Nevermore' and 'Te Rerioa', and works by Seurat, Rousseau, Toulouse-Lautrec and Modigliani. The Gambier-Parry Collection contributes medieval and early Renaissance paintings, maiolica, medieval enamels and ivory carvings. Sculptural highlights include three 15th-century marble reliefs of the Virgin and Child, the most significant by Mino da Fiesole. The gallery occupies rooms designed by Sir William Chambers in Somerset House, with the inscription 'ΟΥΔΕΙΣ ΑΜΟΥΣΟΣ ΕΙΣΙΤΩ' above the entrance to the Great Room. Open to the public since 1989, it closed for a £50 million refurbishment between 2018 and 2021. The full collection, with more than 33,000 objects, is available online.
