Venetian Arsenal
A former state complex of shipyards and armouries in the Castello district, spread over about 45 hectares and surrounded by a 3.2 km wall. Inside, standardised ship parts -- armament, ropes, rigging -- were made separately and then assembled, and galleys moved along a canal between the construction stages. The main entrance is the Porta Magna, a Renaissance work of around 1460 inspired by the Roman Arch of the Sergii in Pula, flanked since 1687 by two marble lions brought from Piraeus; one of them preserves runes carved by Scandinavian mercenaries. Today part of the site is devoted to research, to exhibitions during the Venice Biennale and to the conservation of historic vessels.
